The newest version of Placemaker for SketchUp just released, and it contains a very significant upgrade – a huge database upgrade for 3D buildings in the USA! This update allows you to create cities using Microsoft’s mapping data, significantly improving the number of buildings that you can create in Placemaker!

Placemaker Version 2.1 Features
As many of you know, Placemaker is a one click city building extension from MindSightStudios that can create a city with a single click!
In the newest version, they just rolled out a number of new features, one in particular that I’m really excited about.
New Building Data Library
The first (and most exciting) feature is that they just rolled out beta access to a whole new library of buildings. While before they were getting building data from Open Street Map, which has a great, but incomplete set of building data, they’re now able to pull data from Microsoft, which has a much larger library of buildings within the US.
One thing to note is that right now, this is a beta function, and it’s only working in the US, but it significantly increases the amount of building data available within your models.
In this image, see how much more building data I’m able to pull in using the buildings USA option, rather than the buildings global option. .
Note that you should still start with the buildings global option, then use the Buildings USA option to fill in the blanks.
Color Corrected Imagery
Another thing that’s now offered is color corrected images from DigitalGlobe. This can be accessed under the “map” dropdown in the imagery section by selecting the option for “premium.” While premium may be slightly less detailed than the recent option, you can see that the color corrected map data looks much more vibrant than the “recent” data.
