If you remember, a few weeks back I made a video talking about the outliner and how great it is for keeping your model organized, etc. I still believe this, and think that the Outliner is the most underutilized tool out there for SketchUp right now.
That being said, there is one thing about the Outliner you should know…
While the outliner is a fantastic tool for keeping organized, it also updates dynamically when you create new geometry in your model. That means that every time you create a new object in your model, SketchUp also has to update the outliner with this new information. This would be fine, but sometimes SketchUp doesn’t hand the new information very well when the outliner is open, resulting in very slow load times or even your model freezing up. You can see whenever you run a function that creates a lot of groups that the outliner flashes, meaning that it’s trying to keep up in real time with all the geometry that’s being created.
This can be very frustrating, especially for new users that don’t even know what the outliner is. The solution is very simple – when adding a lot of new geometry, simply minimize the outliner until you’re done. If you do this, SketchUp will not try to update the outliner in real time, meaning that you will not run into this performance issue.
It’s a very simple fix – just minimize the outliner when you’re creating new geometry and you’ll be good to go. This doesn’t mean the outliner isn’t a valuable tool, just that you need to be mindful of what you’re doing and make sure to have it open at the right time.
